Roger Hargreaves’ Mr Men Debuted 35 Years Ago
Are you looking for books to read to your pre-schooler? Ones that will make your child — and you – feel happy and silly and giggly all at the same time? Then consider the entire series of 40 Mr Men and 30 Little Misses created by Roger Hargreaves.
BBC News reports that Hargreaves created the first Mr Men, Mr Tickle, thirty-five years ago. Looking at the exhibition recently opened at the Animation Art Gallery in London, it’s no surprise that Hargreaves is apparently the third best-selling children’s author of all time.

Now there’s a piece of bona fide Pub childhood nostalgia. My sister and I loved the Mr Men/Little Miss books as kids. At my nursery school (kindergarten) we were even assigned coat pegs with Mr Men/Little Miss characters on them. I was Mr Messy. Odd really considering how neat and tidy I turned out
I remember these from primary school. Also, down here, the video cassettes of the Mr Men series are going for a real bargain at the Warehouse chain. I can’t remember my favourite character though.
Sam: What I would give for one of those coat hangers!
Jack: Back when I was a kid we didn’t have the videos of course, just the books. And boy did they become dog-eared.
35 years old? And I thought my kids were watching great “pseudo vintage” cartoons (which, btw, they love – they sometimes run them on Belgian TV too nowadays). I had no idea – when I was a kid (and I was born around the same time as Mr Men), we didn’t have them. At least, not that I remember. Perhaps I shouldn’t have played outside so much…
I don’t remember them, but I was always partial to George and Martha.
Serge:
Now there’s a claim to fame — born the same year as Mr Men!
Jeremy: This one’s perfect for you http://www.popartuk.com/humour/little-miss-mp0111-poster.asp
I didn’t have the videos, either, Andrea, but if anyone from New Zealand is reading and wants them, they are going for a song!
