35 1/2 Ideas for Your Blog Posts
If you blog long enough, you’ll occasionally find yourself staring at the computer screen wondering "what am I going to write about today?" We’ve all been there.
Here’s a list of ideas to get you started, along with an example for each. If you send me more ideas, I’ll include them on the list. BTW, these are presented in no particular order.
- Comment on a current event (Accentuate the Positive, 2.0)
- Draw a cartoon (No Copy)
- Share something personal (Vy Blog)
- Write about your future plans (Pub-lic Spaces)
- Offer some helpful advice (Trafcom News)
- Sing the praises of another blog (On Message from Wagner Communications)
- Participate in a silly meme (POP! PR Jots)
- Conduct an interview (Beyond Madison Avenue)
- Create a link roundup (many have done this, Blog Business World posted about it)
- Provide a definition or answer a question (Answer Girl does this exclusively)
- Write about celebrities (Media Orchard)
- Write about pseudo-celebrities (The Flack)
- Piggy-back on a controversial topic (Holmes Report Blog)
- Talk about the state of the blogosphere (Corporate Engagement)
- Have some fun (Communication Overtones)
- Blog about how to help kids (Citizen Brand)
- Write about goodies you’ve received (hyku)
- Blog about your baby (What’s Next Blog)
- Start a brand new blog (Neville Hobson.com)
- Blog about a book or article you wrote (Naked Conversations)
- Rant a little (Phil’s Blogservations)
- Summarize the highlights of a conference (Mutually Inclusive PR)
- Soften the blow of pointing out when PR practitioners screw up (The Bad Pitch Blog)
- Write about "a day in the life" (wet feet pr)
- Offer suggestions for constructive dialog (PR Communications)
- Post a picture (Much Ado About Marketing)
- Expose the seedier elements of society (Adrants)

What I definitely don’t recommend? Creating a list like this… it takes too darn long!
It takes too long and is probably more useful than a post we could have made up, I agree you definitely don’t need to do it again
Well, I hope it helps someone who might be stuck one day. Do I get good karma points for this?
What a great idea! I think we should all share the “pain” and agree to do a post like this every so often as a public service.

My opinion about these posts? Well, I think they’re all illustrative, otherwise I wouldn’t have included them. But what I enjoy most is reading a post where someone is creative (#2), original (#8), generous to their fellow bloggers (#6), willing to take a stand (#13 and #27), or interested in the greater good (#16). A post that forces you to get outside your comfort zone and makes you think (albeit expressed in a respectful and civilized manner) and hopefully helps you grow professionally and maybe even personally. Does that answer your question?
A lot of work, but really effective and cool. I am not kissing anything, I just stand in awe of the idea.

This is a very powerful list of ideas for bloggers searching for posting topics. Finding things to write about is one of the biggest problems facing blog writers, new and established. Running out of subjects for posting fodder is one of the major reasons often cited for blog abandonment.
Thank you for the hard work you’ve done compiling them into one handy reference post.
Creative post - I liked it a lot…I think all bloggers have those ‘off days’ and this is something to help them break the ice. We all need a good ice breaking post once in a while, it helps stir creativity and thoughts for future posts.
I think I’ll go for #1/2: Don’t blog that day. I hereby include the right to laziness in the Universal Declaration of Bloggers’ Rights! Doesn’t exist? Then we should invent it… Btw: nice work, Andrea. Must have been a hell of a job. Respect!
